Toe Yoga Is an Effective Foot Stretch

Research has indicated that minimalist footwear is beneficial to wear while walking. This may help to improve balance and physical movement, despite the fact that many people may feel more comfortable running in cushioned shoes. The feet may maintain optimum foot health when strengthening exercises are frequently performed. These can include toe yoga, which can be done by stretching the toes in various ways. An effective stretch is done by bunching the toes together, and then stretching them as wide as possible, while having the big toe touch the ground. An additional stretch that can benefit the plantar fascia can be done while kneeling and sitting on the heels with the toes flexed against the floor or mat. There are several foot exercises and stretches that can be practiced which can help overall foot health. If you would like more information about specific stretches, please confer with a podiatrist who can answer any questions you may have.

What Causes Pain in the Ball of the Foot?

The forefoot is a third of the foot which is closest to the toes. Pain in this area, sometimes referred to as metatarsalgia, often centers on the ball of the foot and the toes. Causes include bunions or other misalignment of the toes, rheumatoid arthritis, or a buildup of calluses. Another common cause is sesamoiditis, an inflammation of two tiny bones near the toes, called sesamoids. This is often seen in dancers, runners, and athletes who apply pressure when flexing the toes. Morton’s neuroma is another cause, which damages nerves that run between the toes. Pain and a burning sensation from this condition is generally located between the 3rd and 4th toes. This is more common in women, especially those who wear high heels with pointy toes. Being overweight, stress fractures, and high arches can also contribute to metatarsalgia.  Forefoot pain usually gets worse when walking, standing, and running, or when the foot is flexed. To have your forefoot pain properly diagnosed, please visit a podiatrist.

Can Pins and Needles Occur From PAD?

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) can cause numbness and a pins and needles sensation in the feet. This happens as a result of arteries that have become blocked, and it can be common among diabetic patients. Additional symptoms can include foot wounds that will not heal, poor toenail growth, and the feet may feel cold. People who enjoy working out may find the pain gradually diminished after exercises are completed, and this can be because of increased blood flow to the muscles. PAD is diagnosed by performing a test that is known as an ankle-brachial index (ABI). This is an effective method for comparing the blood pressure in the arms to the blood pressure in the legs. There may be more testing that is required if the results are abnormal. Additionally, many patients are unaware they may have PAD and may easily be mistaken for arthritis. If you have any of the symptoms mentioned, it is advised that you consult with a podiatrist who can diagnose PAD and offer various treatment techniques.

Peripheral artery disease can pose a serious risk to your health. It can increase the risk of stroke and heart attack. If you have symptoms of peripheral artery disease, consult with one of our podiatrists from Toms River Podiatrist . Our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is when arteries are constricted due to plaque (fatty deposits) build-up. This results in less blood flow to the legs and other extremities. The main cause of PAD is atherosclerosis, in which plaque builds up in the arteries.

Symptoms

Symptoms of PAD include:

  • Claudication (leg pain from walking)
  • Numbness in legs
  • Decrease in growth of leg hair and toenails
  • Paleness of the skin
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Sores and wounds on legs and feet that won’t heal
  • Coldness in one leg

It is important to note that a majority of individuals never show any symptoms of PAD.

Diagnosis

While PAD occurs in the legs and arteries, Podiatrists can diagnose PAD. Podiatrists utilize a test called an ankle-brachial index (ABI). An ABI test compares blood pressure in your arm to you ankle to see if any abnormality occurs. Ultrasound and imaging devices may also be used.

Treatment

Fortunately, lifestyle changes such as maintaining a healthy diet, exercising, managing cholesterol and blood sugar levels, and quitting smoking, can all treat PAD. Medications that prevent clots from occurring can be prescribed. Finally, in some cases, surgery may be recommended.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our office located in Toms River, NJ . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot care needs.

Preventing Heel Fissures

Cracked heels, or heel fissures, can look quite unattractive and can feel uncomfortable. This condition can affect a wide variety of individuals and it occurs when the skin on the back of the heels becomes so incredibly dry that the skin breaks or cracks. There are several steps that you might consider taking to prevent the onset of cracked heels. For example, you may try to keep your bare feet from being exposed to extreme hot or cold weather by covering your feet with appropriate dry socks and footwear. Additionally, to try to prevent cracked heels, one could be diligent about checking the ingredients in the soap used to clean one’s body, as soap can often dry out the skin. For instance, sodium lauryl sulfate and artificial fragrances are two main ingredients often used in soap products that can sometimes dry the skin out. Lastly, one could consider not using extremely hot water when taking a bath or shower. If you have heel fissures or are concerned about developing this condition, contact a podiatrist who can help you with this affliction.

Cracked heels are unsightly and can cause further damage to your shoes and feet. If you have any concerns, contact one of our podiatrists from Toms River Podiatrist . Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Cracked Heels

Cracked heels appear unappealing and can make it harder for you walk around in sandals. Aside from looking unpleasant, cracked heels can also tear stockings, socks, and wear out your shoes. There are several methods to help restore a cracked heel and prevent further damage.

How Do You Get Them?

Dry skin is the number one culprit in creating cracked heels. Many athletes, walkers, joggers, and even swimmers suffer from cracked heels. Age and skin oil production play a role to getting cracked heels as well.

Promote Healing

Over the counter medicines can help, especially for those that need instant relief or who suffer from chronic dry feet.

Wear Socks – Wearing socks with medicated creams helps lock in moisture.

Moisturizers – Applying both day and night will help alleviate dryness which causes cracking.

Pumice Stones – These exfoliate and remove dead skin, which allows for smoother moisturizer application and better absorption into the skin.

Change in Diet

Eating healthy with a well-balanced diet will give the skin a fresh and radiant look. Your body responds to the kinds of food you ingest. Omega-3 fatty acids and zinc supplements can also revitalize skin tissue.

Most importantly, seek professional help if unsure how to proceed in treating cracked heels. A podiatrist will help you with any questions or information needed.
